League Game 4 & Wendover Weekend!
League game #4
After the horrendous finish last week, I needed to have a good game to stay near the top of the standings. That usually entails not making hero calls. I like to play aggressive, especially if I flop big but these guys are willing to go broke in the 1st level so I have to continue to take that into consideration. I flopped a straight flush draw early, which normally I'd play pretty aggressive, but I just called and of course because I have too many outs, I don't get there. In the middle stages of the tournament, I was able to build my stack close to 40K. Then there was a hand at the 400/800 level where I open raised with
to 2800, SB pushes all in for 5K which obv I have to call regardless. He tables the worst hand for me
. Then I flop a huge draw,

but again, too many outs and I don't get there. Thats where the chip bleeding began and I couldn't get anything going after that. I went into the final table with about 20K, blinds 1K/2K. I ship it in on the SB with
behind 3 or 4 limpers and was instacalled by one of the EP limpers. Figured I ran into AA/KK but he tabled AKo, dominating my hand regardless. Personally I'm not a fan of the limp calling an AI with AKo but people LOVE AK. Board doesn't improve me and I'm out in a dissappointing 10th. I am currently 4th overall, and within 15 pts of the leader so it wasn't a total disaster. I'll take 1st in one of these things sooner or later.
Wendover Weekend
One of my brother's friend was having his birthday out in Dover so I decided to tag along and go play some poker and gamble a little bit. I put in two 4 team parlay cards and each card lost by 1 game. I had so many chances to keep it within the spread but turnovers killed it. We played blackjack and watched football, while waiting for everyone to arrive. When everyone got there, I took a few shots with them but went on my way because I didn't want to be drunk for the Rainbow poker tournament and cash game I planned on playing.
The tournaments in Dover are really fast. Started with 600, 5/10 blinds, doubling every 20 mins. Didn't win any big pots in the first couple of levels and really didn't get anything going. Came back from break with 1600 in chips blinds now 75/150. I ship it in a few hands after the break with
out of the SB in a limped pot and was instacalled by
. Slow playing and limp raising with big slick is apparently the new move I haven't read about yet. Board spikes an Ace and good game me, out in 20th place out of 40ish.
Now its time to play some 2/5 NL. I put my name on the list and I get seated at the "must move" table. They have two main games going and I hate the must move game. Heres a crazy hand. EP raises to $15 and gets numerous callers, including the button, SB, BB (me), and UTG. Flop

. I have nothing but I don't remember my cards. Everybody checks, including original raiser and someone in LP bets $40. Button calls, and SB calls AI for $500+. UTG TANKS forever and folds. Bettor folds as does the button. UTG shows me and the guy to his left the King high flush! I'm thinking, are you crazy!? How can you lay that down right there. SB tells him it was a good lay down because he had the ace high flush. Table calls BS and we engage in a conversation about it for 30 mins. It was pretty funny. Everybodys stunned he laid down the king flush and NO ONE believes the SB when he said he had the ace high flush. Good times. I was able to build my stack up to about $600 prior to moving to one of the main games.
Small pots here and there to start off with and then this hand came up. I have 600/700 behind and limp in MP with
and we take a multiway flop of

. Checked to me, I check, LP bets $20, 2 callers and I raise to $140. Suprisingly, I get a call from one of the limp callers. Turn
and he checks to me. Not really my favorite card peeling of the deck. I elected to check behind in this spot. Mainly because I was deep enough to where if I bet, I didn't want to get checkraised all in. People LOVE their flush draws out in Dover and it wouldn't have surprised me if he overcalled with one in that spot. River
and he leads out for $150. It definitely smelled liked a value bet of somekind. I thought 55 was a possibility but why wouldn't he have check raised the flop instead of having me do it? What was he smooth calling LP bets with? I felt he was value betting a flush. I moved all in (about 400 more). He calls and tables
. OUCH! 4 outs on the flop.
So.....we reach into our wallet and pull out another $400. Only significant hand: limpers, MP raises to $15, call, and I call with
on the button. We take a multiway flop of

. GIN! Orginal raiser checks, MP bets $35 and I'm the only caller. Turn
. MP checks, I bet $65 and he calls. River
and he leads out for $150. WTF? The bet really had me baffled. Is just an ace really possible here? AK seems possible. Why not check raise the turn when I bet if you have a set? The hand played out really wierd so I chose not to raise and call. He tables
. He asks why I didn't raise him there because I'd have his entire stack. He put a blocking bet on me and didn't even know it. Theres no way I can put him on a naked king there, the ONLY hand that would call that I was beating. I figured if I raise in that spot, the only hand calling is one that is beating me. Maybe I missed a value bet but the way it played out, I just played it more cautiously. I ended the 5 hr session cashing out a little over 1K, for a $200 profit. Not bad considering I was $400 in the whole. It was a fun trip and made a little money. The game is pretty soft for the most part, if you know who to avoid; Who the "sharks" are I guess. I'd play out there all the time if I could.
Happy Birthday Hoop!
