Thursday February 7, 2008 - My first ever Razz session!
I've played a lot of holdem in my life. Its one of my favorites and of course my most knowledgable game. Starting last year, I ventured into other games (Omaha, Stud, Razz, hi/lo versions, HORSE, Chinese poker, etc). I figured it was time to try other games so I can start becoming a well rounded poker player. I'll admit, I don't know the advance strategies of most of these games but I know the basics and it still boils down to poker hands. Razz's variation is that you try to get the worse possible hand, ace being low, and straights and flushes are irrelevant. (Nuts are A, 2, 3, 4, 5). It is also played in a limit form and yesterday was 2/4 limit .25 ante and .50 bring in.
I started off the night with hands not going anywhere. I would start with 2, 4, 5; 3, 4, 5; 2, 3, 6; etc and then paint on 4th and paint on 5th or i'd pair then 2 pair. It was pretty frustating. Of course with good starting hands not going anywhere, I started getting cute and would play crappy hands and those wouldn't go anywhere either. I bought in for $85 and probably dipped as low as $40. However, I managed to get my composure together and cashed out 155 for a profit of +70.
I'm not advanced enough in Razz to remember specifics of hands, especially in low limit games. Razz is just one of those games where its really hard to "make moves" and bluff because you get to see so much of the hand. It's more about value betting.
It was a good experience and definitely fun. I hope to play again in the future.

Razz does make it really tough by putting so many cards down on the table. I was playing it with a couple of buddies last week and wound up loosing about $200. No biggie though, next week poker is at my house and I will wipe the floor on some Texas Holdem'
