Weekend Update
I wanted to play in the Rainbow Spectrum poker tournament so I headed out to Wendover Sat afternoon with Wil. Prior to the start of the tournament, I hit the blackjack tables. That wound up being a bad idea. Just couldn't win! It was pretty ridiculous.
I hadn't played meaningful poker in quite some time so I was pretty excited to play in the tournament. If you've ever played in this Dover tournaments, the blind structures and levels are pretty ridiculous so you have to be lucky and accumulate chips quickly. Especially in this event since its a rebuy tournament. I didn't play a significant in the first level. I think I raised one hand preflop and took down the 5/10 blinds. 2nd level, 10/20 blinds, I raise to 75 UTG with AJo. I felt I established a tight image early and wanted to see what type of action I would get. I get a caller from the BB. Flop brought J 7 4 rainbow. BB bets 25. At this point, I felt like he had a medium pocket pair or J10, QJ, KJ, range. I raised to 100 and he calls. Turn, blank (I don't remember the card exactly but now theres 2 to the flush. He checks and I bet 175. He calls. I still think my initial read is right at this point. River low card but completes the 3 card backdoor flush. He checks. I felt like I was still good but I wanted to see what cards he was playing here so I check behind. Guy tables AA and scoops the pot. WTF!? Ya, didn't see that one coming. No possible way I had him on QQ, KK, AA range here. He played it really odd. Oh well, that pretty much took over half my stack (start with only 500) and now I was in push mode. Suprisingly, I was able to to build back up to about 650 by break time (after the 3rd level) and with the addon, I was sitting at 1650 after the break going into level 4 (40/80 blinds, I know ridiculous). I again lose half my stack with AJs when I raised from the BB behind 2 limpers and a guy min limp raised me. I called, checked the flop when I missed everything and he pushes. Of course I fold since all I have is A high. In the 5th level (75/150) I never got into a showdown even though I damn near pushed everytime if it was folded to me in late/middle position, regardless of cards. The guy to my immediate left would do the same thing if I happen to fold. We were both in survival mode. I have no idea how I lasted as long as I did. Level 6 (150/300)was my demise. I had about 2400 left. EP min raises to 600 and its folded to me. I saw AJs on the button and decided to make my stand right here, which in hindsight, I think I could have waited for a better spot. BB also goes AI for about the same amount at which point I knew I was really behind. Initial raiser calls and shows AK. BB has QQ. Great. I flop a J to breathe some life but the turn and river brought K, K and bye bye TK.
I was dissapointed with my showing but again, you have to win the hands you get involved in at these tournaments or else your chips deplete fast. There really isn't much room for mistakes.
The highlight of the weekend was sports betting. I hit a 3 team parlay, won all my straight bets, and netted about $600 handicapping which helped offset the loss at the tables. Still a losing weekend overall. I wish I would have spent more time playing poker.
I'm playing in a game tonight. I need to be focused and I think I should do alright. I haven't played forever and once I ease back into it, everything will fall into place.
Good Luck!
