Lets get caught up...
Handicapping: I'm having a subpar year thus far. I'm right around 53% right now but I'm missing my bigger plays. It sucks. I can't put together a solid week. I'll have a good session betting College but a bad NFL or vice versa. I haven't had any big plays yet this year. It seems every year it gets harder and harder because there's so much coverage of teams now. I used to spend a lot of my time looking at the Sun Belt, MAC, Mountain West, WAC, etc but now teams get so much coverage when they're doing good. Lets be honest, we've made our fair share of money betting the Bowling Green's, Toledo's, Boise St, Utah, etc when they had their runs. There was a period a couple years back where Boise St at home was an autobet. Luckily we had a Boise St homer in our group always talkin' them up! I'm up right around 5 units for the year. It isn't much but at least I'm positive. I need to be better about posting my plays here just so its easier to track and recall my leans. I did last week and played most of the leans. Suprisingly, I did pretty well. I did a pretty good analysis on the total last night on Marshall/Memphis game. My numbers had them scoring in the 40s. Final 24 - 21. However, I took Wil's advice and didn't bet on the game. Bad karma right Wil? Looking forward to a good weekend!
Fantasy Football: I suck. I never put too much stock in fantasy. Everything is random anyway. I get a kick out of the guys that gets all crazy because HE KNEW Samkon Gado would rush for 200 yds and 3 tds or Derek Anderson would have 400 yds 4 tds. Seriously, you draft your players, stick em in, and hope for the best. Like anybody in their right mind would sit Peyton Manning and start Joey Harrington. COME ON! Seems my teams are cursed though. Everybody is getting injured! Jackson, Henry, Harrison, Boldin, etc are on my team. No kidding, on one of my teams, half the starters are free agent pickups. Looks like I'll have a tax write off at the end of the year for my donation.
Poker: I had another good session on Monday playing HORSE. Really strange game. There's loose play and then theres just awful play. There was a lot of awful play. Limit games, especially your Studs, Razz, etc are very straight foward. You see your opponent's hand. You can make a pretty good determination of what you have in relation to your opponent. On one hand, I had my opponent call me on 5th, 6th, and 7th, with me knowing he had to go perfect, perfect, perfect to beat me. And he did. Money was flying and I didn't mind. +70 for the night but it should have been more.
Last night, I played .50/1.00 NL holdem. It actually has been a while since I've played NL cash game. I was definitely a little rusty. I made some great plays, and some terrible ones. I played really weak. Usually, I'm aggressive if I sense weakness but I played pretty timid. Not my style. Sure enough, I got felted and lost $80. There was this guy there that I never played with before and I think he played 9 out of 10 hands. Seriously. He limped in EVERY pot. Didn't matter. There was only one hand that I felt I played really well. I misread my opponent on the flop, but I got lucky on the turn and was able to maximize the hand. Other than that, I got caught semi bluffing for $50 with the nut flush draw and got felted. Bleh.
When I play poker, I always try to improve myself and my game every single time I sit down. I evaluate my play, situations, etc and try to keep a mental memory of all the things that are going on. I admit, some sessions I come away with nothing. Some sessions, I think about the plays for weeks. Nothing bugs me more than when I don't learn a damn thing during a session. I love being put in situations where I HAVE TO think. Is he making a play? Does he have it? Why is he betting that much? etc.
Poker is alot about self evaluation. Sometimes its hard to do because its hard to be critical of yourself. There's no standard measuring stick. You basically set your own goals and self evaluate. Personally, I'm pretty hard on myself. I hate losing. I hate making mistakes. I'll evaluate some hands to death. Did I make the right play? Did I maximize my winnings on that hand? etc. Thats what you have to do to get better. You have to be your own critic.
Every so often, you'll get a compliment from friend, opponent, etc about your game. This was written about me.
"If you had to stake one SLPMG Member in a WSOP event (besides yourself) who would it be, what event would it be, and why did you make those choices?
I hate to make a choice like that, there are some very good players and I would be far more inclined to stake one of half a dozen I can think of rather than myself.
If I had to choose just one it would be TK in No Limit Holdem. When playing with him I admire the way he watches everything, process all the information before he acts, prides himself on limiting the hands of his opponents to a select few and making decisions based on that. If he could just cure himself of calling anyway just to see if he was right even though he knows he's beat."
I respect the opinions of my peers especially ones who's game I also admire. Honestly, I owe every single person I've ever played poker with because you've shaped me into the poker player I am today. I've probably played the most poker with Hyde, Dave, Yaz, and Wil through the years and I know that I've incorporated each person's style into my play. It's an honor to have someone you play with alot think that about my game. If you ever read this, Thanks Bruce. You've taught me a lot without you even knowing it because of the way you play your game.
