August 4, 2007 - My Saturday Night Game

$.50/$1.00 - At first, I wasn't sure if the game was going to happen.  I only had 5 sign up for the game around noon but sure enough, I get some late phone calls and we're sitting pretty at 10 handed!  I wanted to take an aggressive approach to today's game.  I thought this would be a good strategy given the players at the game and apply a lot of pressure on them.

Early on in the session, I limp in middle position with Ah2h and get about 6 to the flop.  Flop:  3 4 5, flush draw.  SB bets $5, 1 caller to me, and I bump it to $15.  The sb is the only caller.  Turn 8, non flush.  SB bets $25.  At this point, I'm still not sure what he could have.  Honestly, he could have anything because he plays really odd.  His bets rarely makes sense.  I elected to call in this spot and play it slow.  River 2, nonflush.  SB bets $50.  Well, if I was winning before, I'm still winning now.  I just call and he shows me 6 7.  Not much you can do there.  Right out the gate, I'm stuck in this game.

In middle position, I open raise to $4.50 with KhQh and get 1 caller.  Flop A J 7, 2 diamonds.  I bet $6 and get called.  Turn A, non diamond and it goes check check.  River J, non diamond.  I check and my opponent bets $14.  I would say about 95% of the time, I'm done with this hand.  However, in this spot, against this opponent, I was not.  I had on him a flush draw on the turn.  If he was on the flush draw, I would have the nuts, technically.  Worse case scenario, we'd chop if he had the Kd.  I wanted to speculate and at the same time, show the table I'll call with anything.  I called and he had 10 high.  Table was stunned!

Here's an odd sequence:  I raise utg with Kd10d to $3 and get no action.  I flash the K and say I never get any action when I have monsters.  This normally does not happen in this group when I raise.  VERY NEXT HAND, KK in the bb.  4-5 limpers and I raise out of the bb to $7 and get one caller.  Flop came raggy, I bet $3 and he folded.  Seriously, this never happens!

I get dangerous and limp in with 8h9h in the hijack seat behind a bunch of limpers.  Flop 3 6 8, 2 diamonds.  utg+1 (same guy from hand 1 that had 67) bets $4, mp calls, and I bump it to $15.  After some thought, they both call.  At this moment, I have one of them on a flush draw and the other one on a weak 8 and I think I can get them off of it.  Maybe even both of them are on a flush draw.  Turn 2, non diamond.  SB bets $25.  mp folds and its to me.  I was confused with the bet.  Again, this opponent's bets never makes sense to me.  I still feel like he was on a flush draw but he'd play a set or two pair the same way.  What confused me was, what could he limp in early position with?  He's normally not very aggressive preflop, as I've only seen him raise with Category 1 hands and he loves suited cards.  I slow down and elected to just call.  River 2, non flush.  He bets $30.  This is exactly how he played the hand from earlier!  As I ran the different combinations through my head, I was either dominated or had the best hand.  I called and my opponent showed 77.  Nice!

My BB and button raises to $5.50, who has been pretty active lately.  $5.50 had become his standard raise and the last two times, showed two bluffs, 7 2 and 9 3.  I've been wanting to get in a pot with him and made a really loose call with Ah5c.  Flop 3 3 5, 2 hearts.  I check, he bets $7 and I raise to $20.  He RR for $38.50 more.  Again, more times than not, this is an auto fold.  Our last few sessions, my opponent plays really tight early but loosens up towards the end.  He's used his tight image early to make plays at the end.  He had been pretty active the last little bit and I knew he could have anything.  Against most players in our group, it works and they give him credit for playing tight early.  In most instances, this is easily AA, KK, QQ, etc.  However, in this spot, I didn't think my opponent had a pair.  AK hearts was not possible has I had Ah.  Even against two big hearts, I was still a slight dog!  I felt my opponent had AK, AQ, AJ, KhQh, Qh,Jh, etc.  The more I talked to him, the more I felt like he didn't have a pair.  If he did have two big hearts, I was going to gamble with him.  I called and he said AK good.  I said, really? but I don't have AK, I have a pair.  He turned over AJoff and he bricked out and I win the pot!

I was into the game $250 and cashed out $210.  Another losing session at my game.  I was happy with it though because I was able to make a huge comeback.  I need to quit losing big early.  I'm going to play a little snug out the gate next time and see if I can get paid off with huge hands.  I hate climbing out of these holes!
