July 19, 2007 - Eric's Game
I felt really good going to today's game. Fresh off a good performance in Las Vegas, my confidence was really high. I bought in for my usual $40 and was able to built my stack to up to $60 - $70. I was being pretty aggressive early, more so than usual. It was more cards than anything. In the first hour, I picked up JJ, QQ, AA, AK, 1010, etc. Having said that, I still went busto and was stuc in the game $95. I lost a hand where I called a raise with Qd9d on the button. Flop came Q 8 rag with two hearts. My opponent bets $3.50 and I made it $13.50 to go. I felt my opponent wasn't a fan of the board and IF I was wrong, I would get RR in this spot. After some thought, he called. Turn was Jh. He checked and I put him all in. After some more thought, he called. River was Kh and my opponent turned over pocket 10s, with the 10h. Can't control the outcome of the cards, right?
The other hand of note was when I held QQ in the bb. There was a bunch of limpers in front of me and I make it $5.50 total to go. UTG calls and so does the sb. Flop: Jd, 10d, 6. sb leads out for $2 and I make it $15 to go. UTG immediately goes AI for about $40. SB folds and its up to me. Here was my range of possible hands: (ones that beat me) 1010, JJ, KK, AA, 66, J10. (ones i beat) KQ, AK, AJ, KJ, QJ, J9, a bunch of combinations of 1 pair, and bluff. Originally limped UTG played a huge factor here. I felt like my opponent would not limp with the majority of the hands here that beat me. I felt there was more possible hands that I COULD beat. If I was wrong, so be it. I called and my opponent turned over QJ (maybe KJ). My QQ held up and I took down a pretty big pot. At the end of the night, I cashed out $115, good for $20 profit. Not bad considering I was stuck $95.
I picked a lot of spots to be aggressive today. More than a handful of times, I was able to pick up on weakness and make plays on the pot. There was a few spots where I sensed weakness but only called to show down the hands. Sometimes I feel gaining information about a player is more vital than actually winning the pot. Overall, I was happy with my play. I was able to pick up some information about some players that should pay dividends in the future. See you at the felt!
