Orleans Open Event #1 $225 7/14/07
I got a good nights sleep and was ready to make some noise in the tournament. Final tally was 600+ and top 54 got paid. I have small goals; get to the next break and maintain average. I never gained any real momentum throughout the tourney. I maintained ave stack or slightly below, usually about 5-10 M. When my M was getting to around 5, I would try to pick up some pots with mediocre hands and was able to do so. I made it to the dinner break at 7pm, first time ever in this big of an event.
With around 70ish people left, I made a raise UTG with 77 and committed myself with the stack I had. I wound up getting it all in preflop and I was up against QQ. Luckily for me, river came 7 and I was able to double up and now had some ammo. Our table broke up and who was I moved next to? Rob, one of the guys I was down there with. He was seated to my immediate right and pretty low stacked. I was able to build my stack to about 25K after the 2nd break after dinner with blinds 800 - 1600 up next. VERY FIRST HAND after the break I pick up AA and get it all in against 77 and he was able to spike a seven against me for close to 70% of my stack. I wasn't able to battle back after that and went busto holding Ah10h against A9 and AJ. 9 flops, 10 turns, and I think a 7 hit the river for AJ to make his straight. I woulda been close to 25K again had I won that pot. Instead I finished 42nd. Rob was able to battle back from being on the bubble, to making final table and doing a chop for 8K. Congrats Rob!
I was happy with my performance but at the same time, dissappointed. Had I won with AA, I'd have a good chipstack and felt good about my chances against my opponents at that table. I'm happy in that I made it into the money for the first time in a big field and I think its signs of things to come. I never really felt like I was outclassed at any point. I'll just go ahead and celebrate the 1st cash in a big tourney, stay focused, and my time will come.
